The Perils of Pre-Scheduled Tweets


When people discover that my expertise extends into social media, I usually get two questions: What advice can I lend about harnessing these seemingly overwhelming social outlets; and how do you stay current with new social media concepts?

It’s exactly because social is constantly evolving that keeping up with it can be difficult. Great social media tips from two months ago might be questionable today. Here's a sobering example:

Most of us have been encouraging clients to utilize one or more platforms that conveniently allow you to schedule in advance a day's worth or more of  tweets and posts all at one time. This made sense. Until last Friday.

As the horrific events were unfolding in a small town elementary school, organizations and businesses who neglected to pull back their pre-authored tweets and posts gave the appearance of being callous. 

Social media can be a powerful component of an integrated communications strategy. Yet sometimes we need a reminder that the richness of social media is engaging in exchanges and building relationships real-time. This is one piece of advice that I guarantee will stand the test of time.
