When people discover that my expertise
extends into social media, I usually get two questions: What advice can I
lend about harnessing these seemingly overwhelming social outlets; and how do you
stay current with new social media concepts?
It’s exactly because social is constantly evolving that keeping up with it can be difficult. Great social media tips from two months ago might be questionable today. Here's a sobering example:
Most of us have been encouraging clients to
utilize one or more platforms that conveniently allow you to schedule in
advance a day's worth or more of tweets and posts all at one time. This
made sense. Until last Friday.
As the horrific events were unfolding in a small
town elementary school, organizations and businesses who neglected to pull back
their pre-authored tweets and posts gave the appearance of being callous.
Social media can be a powerful component of an
integrated communications strategy. Yet sometimes we need a reminder that the
richness of social media is engaging in exchanges and building relationships
real-time. This is one piece of advice that I guarantee will stand the test of
time.
